“Position before Action” – Tips and Tools for every rider
” Position Precedes the Action” is a foundational principle of classical equitation coined by the French master François Baucher (1796–1873). In equitation, it means the rider aims to establish their own posture, balance, alignment and seat before asking the horse for any movement. Instead of training from movement to position (forcing a horse into a shape while on the move), Baucher’s method dictates you establish correct balance from position to movement: The rider adjusts their weight, seat, and rein aids prior to asking something of their horse. This acts a little like the Scout motto, “Be Prepared,” ensuring the rider isn’t interfering with the horse’s center of gravity. Early preparation gives the horse the necessary time to reorganize, slow down, and rebalance itself before taking a physical step or transitioning into a new gait. Result: The horse becomes lighter to the aids, remains relaxed, balanced, and avoids confusion. Format: PDF file via email.
