Leadership starts with how you see your horse, and how your horse sees you.
Dignity and joy is within reach with a calm, curious mind, clear communication and trustworthy actions. But first we need a desire to listen, and be sensitive in order to feel what our horse tries to say. It requires self-discipline, composure, courage, time and tact.
An understanding of basic anatomy and biomechanics leads us to see how important equine balance and laterality is to a horse’s locomotion, and this knowledge guides our techniques and our successes. More knowledge – less instruments.
To progress in riding we give a great deal of attention to establishing a balanced independent seat and sensitive hands that not only feel the horse’s thoughts, but guide and educate their behaviour.

Groundwork Connection
Your skills on foot establish how inspiring, motivating, and worthy of attention you are to your horse.
We only need to look to a group of horses at feed time to notice how little they need to move each other. Rules are clear, everyone knows who eats first. Cues and actions are subtle, any ‘step out of line’ is promptly corrected. It begs the question; why do humans need such extreme and forceful movements to control horses?
To refine your intentions and actions means to be subtle but also clear and reliable. To do what you say, and to follow through with your intentions. How you read and interpret a horse’s behaviour will determine how you inspire them.
Gymnastic groundwork and lunge work is fundamental to improve fitness and function for any ridden work.
Your own posture, body language, presence and thoughts are important. Your attitude either creates interest or distance. What we get on the ground is reflected under saddle. Groundwork sets the ground rules for safe and creative play.

CLASSICAL WORK IN-HAND
On foot in-hand in a bridle or cavesson
Starting a horse’s riding career begins after gymnastic groundwork and lungeing, with classical work in-hand, in a bridle or cavesson. Surprisingly in Australia this is little done, yet it’s an easy, effective and safe way to start horses before riding, and to restart or retrain troubled horses.
From these beginnings you can transform the horse’s fear into relaxation, balance, impulsion, and straightness – all from the ground. With knowledge and practice you can correct problems of resistance without restrictive gadgets. On foot, in a bridle, you teach all the basic rein aids, how to go, stop, turn, back up, yeild.
Then progressively all the flexions can be done systematically: to release and mobilise the jaw, to bend the neck, extend the neck, confidently accept and seek the hand, rounding the poll correctly; light and balanced. From there, the next logical step is to continue in-hand with lateral work.
ADVANCING IN HAND: Beyond this, with balance and lightness in halt, walk and rein-back, we begin gymnastic work in true bend and counter-bend, changing posture, bend or direction, then all lateral work in-hand: shoulder-in, travers, renvers, half pass, and pirouette.
STARTING KINDLY: When a horse understands so much already from the ground, there is no need for any rough ‘breaking in’ or sudden surprises under saddle. Everything is calmly established on foot first – as a kind and natural progression – then, the horse can learn to balance a rider while applying what it already understands – a trusting connection and dialogue of cues between the rider’s hands and the horse’s mouth.

LESSONS & CLINICS
Classical Equitation with the Principles of Ecole de Légèreté.
Each time we ride a horse, we train the horse – for better or worse. Horses have incredible photographic memories, and forget little. Hence, it makes sense to take care from the start to get it right the first time.
Classical dressage is gymnastic schooling that serves the horse – for long term wellness – mental and physical, without harm or harassment. Good dressage brings out the best in every horse and rider, regardless of breed or discipline. It’s how to use a horse without abusing the horse. Its about a dialogue of mutual cooperation and consent.

Testimonial
“Working with Susie has been an enlightening, magical and supportive journey. I’ve learnt so many tools, and with a deeper understanding of biomechanics for the horse and rider this has also improved my students riding as well.
Susie isn’t just an instructor or a coach, she is an amazing mentor. The care and time taken to understand not only me but the process as a whole, makes me feel confident, safe and excited for every lesson I have! Thanks Susie from all of us at Horse & Soul
Lara and of course Vvazz!
